Yes, people want to believe in positive things, so many people were taken in by her.

I didn't realize there was a Garden City, NY connection. I used to party at the clubs in that immediate area last century. Wow, Trotsky stayed in the Bronx, General Santa Ana in Staten Island, and the Anastasia impostor in Long Island.

To me, "Anastasia" and "My Fair Lady" are two sides of the same coin. Both men (one a General, the other a Professor) turn an innocent ingenue into "royalty" and find love with each other at the end of the movie.

I visited a USG facility in Charlottesville, VA many years ago and separately met up with a college friend of mine there. I don't remember much of the city except a huge stadium or arena had been built there.
