(212 posts)If he does impose tariffs, not only will prices of imported items increase but so will the cost in state and/or sales taxes. Think about it, whatever the increase in the price of imported item is it will require sellers to increase their prices to the consumer. So the increased price the consumer pays will be subjected to state and/or city sales. For example, if an item cost $20 and the sales tax is 7%, the amount of tax you'd pay would be $1.40. With a 25% tariff, that $20 item now costs $5 making it $25. The 7% sales tax on $25 would be $1.75 or 35 cents more. So not only is his tariffs increasing the price but he is in fact raising your taxes.
Yeah, I'm sure the MAGaTs thought it through that imposing tariffs results in raising the price of items and increasing the amount they'll have to pay in sales tax is why they voted for him.
