I thought maybe the name had to do with pin boys in the old bowling alleys. My parents used to own a bowling alley in the early 50s before setting the bowling pins was fully automated. They employed teenage boys to set the pins.

In bowling, a pinsetter, or pinspotter, was originally a person who manually reset bowling pins ... labor that most frequently took place evenings), many pinsetters were teenage boys, and thus pinboy is another name used to describe the job.
