The domestic violence etc. The cops at the time would usually just try to convince her to "not set him off" etc. People watch "Happy Days" and they think that was the '50's. The reality for those of us who lived it was far from that. I've written about it all many times before but suffice it to say I saw plenty of women in grocery stores with their sunglasses on and you could see marks on their face and neck. Hands all bruised up. Nowhere to turn and even "going home to mother" usually meant the cops showing up and trying to convince you to "go back and make it work". There was little to no financial aid for women with kids so they were stuck with "going back" as the most workable option. Knowing what would happen. Again and again. I saw women so brutalized that their hands were shaking constantly and they almost never smiled. And worse cases than that. I saw women with their arms in a sling or with a bad limp. Seen way more than I could stomach and way too much to ever forget.
