Read counted cross stitch OR Jacobean embroidery. Jacobean is a style of crewel embroidery:

I started out with printed cross stitch patterns and worked my way up from there. Been embroidering all my life - Mom started me on it as a rainy-day activity when I was about 8 or 9 years old. Anything to get me to sit still and be quiet. But I came to love it!

See if there are any embroidery classes in your area. Keep practicing! Lots of fun and satisfaction to be had.

You should have seen my first attempts at crocheted lace! I think I invented several sorts of permanent knots!
