It's a shame what happened to Wasilla. When I first came up here 40 years ago, it was kind of a cute little rural town. Now it's just urban sprawl. There are some good people out there, but a lot of right-wing crazies, too. If you go north of Anchorage, I would recommend instead taking the route through Palmer, which has stayed true to its agricultural roots.

Unfortunately, if you're going to Denali NP you almost have to go through Wasilla unless you want to add lots of miles on a dirt road to your trip.
