Hydrogen systems are more advantegeous than battery storage: Study presents the potential in mobility and logistics
(translated by Nicole Dominikowski) | 11/04/2023
Hydrogen technology will play a crucial role in a climate-friendly energy supply in the future. It has potential as an alternative in transport and logistics and in the development of e-fuels. Thus, hydrogen could provide a basis for advancing energy transition. This 20-million-euro funded research programme aims to explore the potential and limitations of this technology.
For a successful transition to sustainable energy, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences researchers have spent two years exploring hydrogen technologies as an alternative to fossil fuels. As reducing CO₂ emissions is crucial to meet climate protection targets, the hydrogen economy may play a significant part in achieving a greener energy supply.
The technical feasibility of employing hydrogen as a molecular energy storage medium is ideal for decentralized production, storage, and usage. Nonetheless, its marketability and competitiveness require further testing, as well as establishing an infrastructure for this energy source. The "Hydrogen - green gas for Bremerhaven" project, financed by the ERDF, is examining possible applications for energy supply, vehicle propulsion, logistics usage (such as forklift trucks), and e-fuel experiments.
Even a hydrogen oven has been developed. The "Microgrids - self-sufficient units" study explored the possibility of powering an entire industrial area solely with renewable energy. The "IWAS - Lune Delta" project is examining the economic viability of adopting hydrogen as an alternative for industrial corporations...more
