21. What a great way to learn how and how not to code....doing maintenance

I began my career doing maintenance on legacy code. You quickly form opinions on the best way to do something and you learn to value simplicity of design. I agree, it shouldn't be difficult for an experienced developer to learn Cobol. The problem is there's always something sexier to work on, using the language du jour.
