Timing of chocolate intake affects hunger, substrate oxidation, and microbiota: A randomized controlled trial

Abstract
Eating chocolate in the morning or in the evening/at night, may differentially affect energy balance and impact body weight due to changes in energy intake, substrate oxidation, microbiota (composition/function), and circadian-related variables. In a randomized controlled trial, postmenopausal females (n = 19) had 100 g of chocolate in the morning (MC), in the evening/at night (EC), or no chocolate (N) for 2 weeks and ate any other food ad libitum. Our results show that 14 days of chocolate intake did not increase body weight. Chocolate consumption decreased hunger and desire for sweets (P < .005), and reduced ad libitum energy intake by ~300 kcal/day during MC and ~150 kcal/day during EC (P = .01), but did not fully compensate for the extra energy contribution of chocolate (542 kcal/day). EC increased physical activity by +6.9%, heat dissipation after meals +1.3%, and carbohydrate oxidation by +35.3% (P < .05). MC reduced fasting glucose (4.4%) and waist circumference (?1.7%) and increased lipid oxidation (+25.6%). Principal component analyses showed that both timings of chocolate intake resulted in differential microbiota profiles and function (P < .05). Heat map of wrist temperature and sleep records showed that EC induced more regular timing of sleep episodes with lower variability of sleep onset among days than MC (60 min vs 78 min; P = .028). In conclusion, having chocolate in the morning or in the evening/night results in differential effects on hunger and appetite, substrate oxidation, fasting glucose, microbiota (composition and function), and sleep and temperature rhythms. Results highlight that the “when” we eat is a relevant factor to consider in energy balance and metabolism.

Dispatches From A Collapsing State is an independent venture focused on educating and organizing in resistance of rising authoritarianism.
Though I left academia a couple of years ago to write and organize full-time, I’m still a teacher at heart and always will be. In the classroom I learned that effective education is dependent on scaffolding information, meaning you need to build on ideas and expand them, but also take moments to make sure everyone is on the same page. So, with an influx of new readers who are looking for answers and explanations, considering the complicated nature of our present situation, and hoping that maybe you might want to get friends, family members, coworkers, and neighbors up to speed, this is going to hopefully serve as a primer and explainer so that we can meet the moment and begin to create something better.
At the end of this article I will include a host of resources that I have created. The Audio From A Collapsing State podcast is presently going step-by-step in how to prepare one’s self both for the incoming Trump Administration, but, more importantly, in starting to get involved in organizing, coalition and community building, and creating a movement that can fight back and avoid the worst consequences of what I am about to describe.
I hope you find this helpful as you wrap your mind around all of this and will share with like-minded people so that they can get ready and join the fight.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The woman behind an early Facebook post spreading a harmful and baseless claim about Haitian immigrants eating local pets that helped thrust a small Ohio city into the national spotlight says she had no firsthand knowledge of any such incident and is now filled with regret and fear as a result of the ensuing fallout.
“It just exploded into something I didn’t mean to happen,” Erika Lee, a Springfield resident, told NBC News on Friday.
Lee recently posted on Facebook about a neighbor’s cat that went missing, adding that the neighbor told Lee she thought the cat was the victim of an attack by her Haitian neighbors.
Newsguard, a media watchdog that monitors for misinformation online, found that Lee had been among the first people to publish a post to social media about the rumor, screenshots of which circulated online. The neighbor, Kimberly Newton, said she heard about the attack from a third party, NewsGuard reported.

It looks like the pop mega-star may have pulled off another voter registration coup after encouraging her more than 283 million followers to make sure they are ready to vote in the Nov. 5 presidential election.
While the conventional wisdom has long been that celebrity endorsements of political candidates don’t matter, Taylor Swift has demonstrated success in encouraging her army of fans to become civilly engaged and to register to vote.
It looks like Swift may have pulled off another voter registration coup when she went on Instagram Tuesday night, following the combative presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. The pop mega-star let her 283 million followers known that she was endorsing Democrat Harris for president and her running mate, Tim Walz, for vice president. She also encouraged her followers to make sure they are registered to vote in the Nov. 5 presidential election.

Over the next half day, more than 337,000 visitors landed on the Vote.gov site, directed there by the URL that was shared by Swift, according to a spokesperson with the General Services Administration.
