Yes, we went. No, even though we didn’t discuss politics, it didn’t go well. My brother in law seemed to be just itching to take offense and he did on a trivial matter. I’ve never seen him so exceedingly pissed.

But I wanted to share with the group here an observation. On one side of the restaurant booth sat my sister in law with her husband. Evangelical MAGA red. Being that she’s my sister in law there is no blood relationship.

On the other side of that booth with me sat my wife and my sister.

And here is the observation I made days after the fact: our side of the booth had family histories touched by the Holocaust….. and their side didn’t.

They don’t care about the similarities between America in 2024 and Germany in 1938 because they have no skin in the game. And just like every belt buckle worn by Nazi troops in WWII said, they have God with them.

We have broken off contact. I am forced to concede they believe they are truly the master race.

We voted in SW Florida today

We always drop our ballots at the drop box located at the main election office. Road leading in to the office always has candidate signs. 4 years ago the place was lousy with Trump signs. Only one very badly done Trump sign today. This doesn't mean much since the Orange goblin thinks he has Florida in the bag and didn't pour resources into the State. Still, it felt subdued in a county that hasn't gone for a Democrat for President since 1964.

Sad story, Milton damage

Hurricane Ian put a hole in my brother in law 's roof 2 years ago. Rain poured in and ruined everything. The house was stripped to the studs. Insurance was slow coming and he didn't get as much as he had the house insured for.

Months of repair. House roof tarped and leaked. Finally had a new roof on and new wall board in. He had finished most repairs by this past summer.

Super cell tornado spun off from Milton just took his roof. All of it. House is totalled.

Questions for the legal experts here re: new indictment

Am I right in stating that before an indictment can proceed a grand jury must be unanimous in their belief that a crime has been committed?

And since this is the fifth grand jury with Smith's new superseding indictment how many grand jurors total in all five indictments?

The failure of imagination: Fort Myers Beach/Debby

After hurricane Ian devastated Fort Myers Beach it was decided that a sand berm 4 feet tall would be erected on the Gulf side of the island. This was to mitigate storm surge in the next hurricane. But Fort Myers Beach is an island separated from the mainland by a back bay. The back bay in turn is fed by four passes that lead to the Gulf of Mexico including the huge Mantanzas Pass. No berm was placed on the bay side where hundreds of houses sit.

When Debby hit the water came in from the back bay and flooded Fort Myers Beach…..again. Millions were spent on a berm that did nothing and anyone with common sense would have realized this.

But hey, it’s a red county where stupidity rules.
