More Americans Get Their News From YouTube -- and There's No Going Back

It was around Labor Day when I officially swore off network news. Election fatigue played a role in disconnecting, to be sure, but I’d also found an alternative: YouTube pundits who spend hours live on their channels dissecting the top water-cooler stories of the day and exploring every possible angle. They have names like Akademiks and Kempire, who specialize in hip-hop and pop culture; Emily D. Baker and the Florida Law Man, who break down legal headlines and filings; and titles like Popcorned Planet, Legal AF, The Art of Dialogue and, my personal favorite, Tisa Tells.

As it turns out, I’m not the only one who has made the switch from broadcast and cable news to YouTube — a recent Pew Research Center study found that 54 percent of U.S. adults now get at least some of their information from YouTube newscasters, 25 percent of them on a regular basis (especially, curiously, women, who make up 57 percent of the YouTube news audience).

If you happen to be on the other side of those percentages and haven’t yet watched one of these “shows,” they have nothing like the slickly produced anchor chair- and roundtable-filled sets of CNN, MSNBC or Fox. Most hosts are operating with little more than their built-in computer camera and a ring light. There is no producer to speak of, and certainly not a teleprompter. Much of the time, these MCs are providing analysis in real time, sourcing their information from across social media and the internet and relying on their audience to fill in the blanks.

...Of course, there’s no department of standards and practices for these broadcasters — or, for that matter, a long-standing tradition of journalistic ethics. YouTube does have strict community guidelines, although seasoned hosts know how to evade algorithmic censors (which is why they often speak in what seems like code, referring to, say, “PDF files” instead of using a red-flag word like “pedophiles”). As for vetting — you know, whether or not the news they’re putting out in the world is true — Tisa, for one, says her sources are as good as they come, and she attempts to independently verify each claim with five different methods, including public filings.

It seems that people really started abandoning Morning Joe when they heard about the bended knee
Mara Lago trip that Joe and Mika made and then tried to sell on air.

I have been watching Morning Joe since 2017, but when I woke up the morning after the election and heard
Joe announcing that Trump's victory was "Reagan like" I didn't see a maps so I started wondering, did he win 49 states? As we now know after all the votes were counted, his victory was actually quite mushroom sized (i.e. very small-3rd smallest since 1888 and he won a plurality not a majority, the majority voted for someone else for President).

I was shocked as to why Joe would be saying something so patently false comparing Trump's victory to a landslide, esp. when he won 6 more electoral votes than he did in 2016. Something didn't smell right. Then a few days or a week later, we heard about the obeying in advance trip they made to Florida.

I was truly shocked that even Joe could be lulled into the con that is Don the Convict.

Good riddance...

Trump had such an overwhelming mandate that 38 Republicans stood up and gave President Musk and Vice President Trump the middle finger yesterday, unafraid of their primary threats. That shows their overwhelming power and party discipline! These are definitely "alpha males". 😆😊💯

It finally makes sense, why Latino men went for Trump....but yes, FAFO is coming....

Who else is not watching the Inauguration?

I told myself that if I ever wrote a book I would write one about the Trump years and call it "That was some weird sh*t" (quoting, ironically, George W. Bush after he listened to Trump's 2017 "American Carnage" Inaugural address).

I for one see no need on January 20th to listen to a rapist, yes rapist, r-a-p-i-s-t, insurrectionist, authoritarian, grifter, convicted con artist, liar, and generally all around awful human being. He will place his hand on a Trump bible and lie to protect, preserve, and defend the constitution, and then turn around and do everything in his power to destroy the constitution, like he did in his first term.
