How to Put Musk Out of Business: End Tariff Terrorism
How would you like to own a new Tesla Model 3 that can go 353 miles on a charge, jump from a standstill to 62mph in 3.8 seconds and costs less than $25,000? Sure, youd buy. But you cant. Because Tesla doesnt make one. But Chinese manufacturer BYD does. How do you get one? You cant. Because the US imposes a 100% tariff on all Chinese EVs.
...
Willing to give up some range and size? You can get a BYD Seagull EV for $10,000 just $2,500 after the $7,500 federal EV rebate. Let me repeat that: without government-imposed tariffs and restrictions, you could buy a 100% electric compact for $2,500. (Note: Its estimated that transport and changes to meet US safety rules would add $2,000 offset in many states by tax rebates and utility subsidies.)
...
Yes, I am aware that opening the gates to dirt-cheap Chinese cars would lead to closures of US auto plants. But we keep claiming theres a climate emergency. Either we have an emergency or we dont. If this is a real emergency, we should welcome a nation helping us get to net zero by Thursday. Then, we should help auto workers as FDR did in the 1930s create jobs we need at full union wages. (But thats for yet another column.) Instead, Biden purchased the UAWs endorsement by making Americans wildly overpay for cars. But, in the end, that didnt work out too well for Joe nor Kamala. Nearly half of union households voted for Trump. I must note that, recently, days after BYD announced new price cuts, Trump said hell add an additional 20% tariff (to 120%!) on Chinese EVs to make sure you are pushed into buying a Musk-mobile.

It's an excellent article, delivered in classic Palast style. It just might light a fire in some of you.
Oh, and btw, I am emerging from my sabbatical. Getting the old band back together...rearranging some old hits...if I'm lucky I'll have some guest editorials from some interesting people...

Seth Andrews post-election
Seth Andrews (The Thinking Atheist) put out a 13-minute video on his thoughts post-election. It's very good.
The link below will work for you (I think!) if you have Facebook. If you do not have Facebook, it might not work for you. Some might not want to click on a blind link, but I couldn't embed the video like you can with YouTube stuff, so what evah.

Bloomberg, After Months of Pressure, Donates $50 Million to Help Harris
Source: New York Times
The former mayor of New York City is known for making political donations late in the campaign season. Democrats had been lobbying him to spend more.
Michael R. Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City, under extraordinary pressure from friends and fellow billionaires to do more to help Vice President Kamala Harris, recently donated about $50 million to a nonprofit organization that is supporting her presidential run, according to four people with knowledge of the matter.
The donation followed months of arm-twisting from associates such as Bill Gates, investor Ron Conway and Reid Hoffman, the co-founder of LinkedIn. Mr. Bloomberg recently spoke with Ms. Harris in a private phone call, according to two people briefed on the conversation.
Mr. Bloombergs decision conforms to a strategy that has become his trademark: Confounding Democratic operatives by refusing to make early investments only to come in hot and heavy in the homestretch. But unlike his previous big gifts, this one was intended to be kept under wraps, and that secrecy has made unaware Democrats more anxious than they have been most autumns.
His contribution was made to Future Forward USA Action, the dark-money vehicle of Future Forward, Ms. Harriss main super PAC.

We got a cool one this year in South Texas, and I'm very glad it doesn't say "In God We Trust" anywhere on it.

The enemy within
As with practically everything that comes out of Trump's foul mouth, the "enemy within" is pure projection.
The real enemy within is FOX NEWS, a pure propaganda outfit that lies for their own side and trashes opponents, regardless of the truth.
The real enemy within is Newsmax, OAN, and the myriad of right-wing media whose job it is to build up hatred against Dems and glorify the scum on their side.
The real enemy within is The Heritage Foundation, who cooked up Project 2025 to dismantle the social advances we have made here and turn this country into a dictatorship.
The SCOTUS is also in this group, dismantling our rights and clearing a path for the dictator.

For Trump, a Lifetime of Scandals...
Another one from Peter Baker at the NYT. It seems like he has been saving up the damning nature of Trump and is now releasing it. Woulda been nice a few months ago, Peter, but as they say, "Better late than never." I wonder how quickly this one will fall off the front page?

When the history of the 2024 election is written, one of the iconic images illustrating it will surely be the mug shot taken of Donald J. Trump after one of his four indictments, staring into the camera with his signature glare. It is an image not of shame but of defiance, the image of a man who would be a convicted felon before Election Day and yet possibly president of the United States again afterward.
Sometimes lost amid all the shouting of a high-octane campaign heading into its final couple of weeks is that simple if mind-bending fact. America for the first time in its history may send a criminal to the Oval Office and entrust him with the nuclear codes. What would once have been automatically disqualifying barely seems to slow Mr. Trump down in his comeback march for a second term that he says will be devoted to retribution.
In all the different ways that Mr. Trump has upended the traditional rules of American politics, that may be one of the most striking. He has survived more scandals than any major party presidential candidate, much less president, in the life of the republic. Not only survived but thrived. He has turned them on their head, making allegations against him into an argument for him by casting himself as a serial victim rather than a serial violator.
His persecution defense, the notion that he gets in so much trouble only because everyone is out to get him, resonates at his rallies where he says theyre not coming after me, theyre coming after you, and Im just standing in the way. But that of course belies a record of scandal stretching across his 78 years starting long before politics. Whether in his personal life or his public life, he has been accused of so many acts of wrongdoing, investigated by so many prosecutors and agencies, sued by so many plaintiffs and claimants that it requires a scorecard just to remember them all.

Remember the farmer bailouts in Trump's term?
....Trump bailed out US farmers who were hurt by Trump's "America First" policies and the trade war between China and the US, especially re soybeans. China slapped a 25% tariff on US soybeans in response to US tariffs on Chinese imports and quit buying them altogether. US soybean exports plunged.
I would like to hear Kamala address these tariffs and the trade war Trump started...the huge bailouts of cash given to farmers...
Since tariffs are central to Trump's economic "policy" it would be helpful to many, I think, if she could pick them apart and demonstrate her knowledge of yet another area. People need to be educated re tariffs.
Just MHO.
