* In Case You Missed It (ICYMI) - October 31, 2024 *

It was a legendary suffragist's home. This year it's a voting site.

Kate Scholer was already excited to cast her first vote for a woman presidential nominee when her mom gave her the good news: She can do it at Susan B. Anthony’s house.

Mary Trump - "The Garbage Can of the World"

- Yo_Mama_Been_Loggin (posted in Editorials & Other Articles)

At Donald’s hate rally at Madison Square Garden, one of the speakers referred to Puerto Rico as an island of floating garbage. For months now, Donald has been referring to Kamala Harris as “stupid,” his political opponents as “the enemy, within,” all while calling democrats “sick” and “evil.”

After Joe Biden made a statement in order to push back against the massive amounts of dangerous rhetoric that came out of Donald’s MSG rally, CNN aired an edited clip of what Biden said:

“The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.”

U.S. Air Force officials installed a new kind of structure in the waters of St. Andrew Bay on the shore of the Tyndall U.S. Air Force Base in Northwest Florida on Oct. 30—the first section of a Rutgers University-designed "self-healing" reef made of custom-designed concrete modules and living oysters. The reef is designed to protect the base and its people from hurricanes and tidal surges.

I'm thinking an ICYMI thread could be something I might do on a fairly regular basis... I would pick a post or two from different forums that got 5-15 recs (10-15 in GD) as of publication. No tweets or videos. Just interesting, cool or funny stuff.

Realistically, the election is probably gonna be decided by about 250,000 voters

(less than a tenth of a percent of the population). Sad, but probably true.

If Biden can hang onto MI, WI and PA then it's not gonna matter what else happens. NV will probably stay blue as it has since 2008. AZ and GA could both go red, Biden could fail to pick up NC, and he would still have 276 EV (six more than he needs).

The only edge case scenario with the above would be if NE changed to winner-take-all without ME doing the same, and then Biden somehow lost NV. That would set up a 269-269 tie; but it's so unlikely that I feel like I just wasted a paragraph even bringing it up.

For those still concerned about the Green Party, their numbers plummeted in 2020 in MI, WI and PA. It's my pet theory that a lot of people voted for Jill Stein in 2016 just to try and prove (perhaps to themselves?) that they weren't misogynists for not voting Hillary. Still bitter? I don't blame you, but it's over and done.

Whatever the reason for 2016, I don't see much impetus for any kind of comeback for the Green Party this time around... knock on wood.

So anyway, that's my thinking. MI, WI and PA stay with us, and we'll be good to go.

Polls are useless and only time will tell, but I have a lot of hope because 2016 was the only time we lost ANY of those three states since 1988 - and that year there was an incumbent Republican. This time it's an incumbent Democrat. 2016 was a freak aberration and I strongly doubt it will happen again this year.

Bottom line, of course we cannot afford any kind of complacency, and of course we also need to take back the House and keep the Senate -- but I do not believe we should be losing as much sleep as some of us have been since last Thursday night.

Duck walks into a bar....

A duck walks into a bar and orders a pint

The barman looks at him and says, 'Hang on! You're a duck.'

'I see your eyes are working,' replies the duck.

'And you can talk!' exclaims the barman.

'I see your ears are working, too,' says the duck. 'Now if you don't mind, can I have my beer and my sandwich please?'

'Certainly, sorry about that,' says the barman as he pulls the duck's pint. 'It's just we don't get many ducks in this pub. What are you doing round this way?'

'I'm working on the building site across the road,' explains the duck. 'I'm a plasterer.'

The flabbergasted barman cannot believe the duck and wants to learn more, but takes the hint when the duck pulls out a newspaper from his bag and proceeds to read it.

So, the duck reads his paper, drinks his beer, eats his sandwich, bids the barman good day and leaves.

The same thing happens for two weeks.

Then one day the circus comes to town.

The ringmaster comes into the pub for a pint and the barman says to him 'You're with the circus, aren't you? Well, I know this duck that could be just brilliant in your circus. He talks, drinks beer, eats sandwiches, reads the newspaper and everything!'

'Sounds marvelous,' says the ringmaster, handing over his business card. 'Get him to give me a call.'

So the next day when the duck comes into the pub the barman says,
'Hey Mr. Duck, I reckon I can line you up with a top job, paying really good money.'

'I'm always looking for the next job,' says the duck. 'Where is it?'

'At the circus,' says the barman.

'The circus?' repeats the duck.

'That's right,' replies the barman.

'The circus?' the duck asks again. 'That place with the big tent?'

'Yeah,' the barman replies.

'With all the animals who live in cages, and performers who live in caravans?' says the duck.

'Of course,' the barman replies.

'And the tent has canvas sides and a big canvas roof with a hole in the middle?' persists the duck.

'That's right!' says the barman..

The duck shakes his head in amazement, and says ........

'What the hell would they want with a plasterer???'

I'm gonna say something unpopular now

And get thoroughly bashed for it, but I strongly believe it to be true and I never back down in that situation. (That doesn't mean I'll stick around to battle all comers, as I also believe it's pointless to argue with people who have already made up their minds.)

What I'm going to say is due to having just seen the following meme posted on Facebook - I've seen memes like it here and on fb before ad nauseum. Here it is:

My response is as follows:

Every four years the same thing happens: People get all authoritarian and condescending, and try to blame, shame or otherwise coerce people who might consider voting for Democrats into voting for Democrats. It never works, and instead alienates people and makes it even more likely that they'll vote third party. Like it or not, voting is an emotional action and not a logical one. Logically, people who are hoping to stop third party voting would stop posting memes like this. They would instead ignore the phenomenon, which might discourage it due to the lack of attention paid to it. Rather than wasting energy on something so counterproductive, they could instead positively engage possible third-party voters and woo their votes instead of demanding or pleading for their allegiance based solely on having a common dislike for the other main political party.

(I'm not even gonna bother refuting the false -- or at least impossible to prove true -- statements that third party candidates are what cost Gore and HRC their elections.)

Such blockheadedness does not befit Democrats, and certainly doesn't help our cause.

Sorry, I'm not buying it

I sympathize with both Palestinians and Israelis. What I can't buy is, the idea that Israel would knowingly continue to give itself a black eye and worsen its public image by attacking schools or hospitals that were NOT being used as Hamas hideouts. It just would not make sense that they would increase the pressure on themselves to end the war they seem determined to continue.

When they say they precisely targeted a part of the school that was being used by Hamas, I believe it. I don't necessarily support it, as there are limits to how precise a strike can be and I don't support "collateral damage" a.k.a. the deaths of children and faculty -- I don't see this as a necessity. I feel there are other ways. But the shrill cries that Israel is purely evil and would be hitting these targets just to kill Palestinians, then blaming it on Hamas... it's just not a tenable position IMO and - I hate to say it, because it's fellow DUers - but as a non-Jew, it seems anti-Semitic to me.

I can both give you a fish, and teach you to fish

Here's the fish:

https://archive.ph/2aOHh

In order to fish, you copy the url of the article under paywall. Then you type "archive.ph" into your search bar. Paste the url in where it says "I want to search the archive for saved snapshots.". If it's already there, you'll get a link like the one above. If not, paste the url in where it says "My url is alive and I want to archive its content".

In addition, you can get past many paywalls in Safari on an ipad using Reader View. You can also go into your browser settings and temporarily disable Javascript in advance settings. But archive may be easier for most people.

Editorials & Other Articles needs to be a main forum!

(JMO of course)

Here is my supporting evidence:

I examined the Greatest Page this evening, clicked on every GD link, and classified it as either "EOA" (Editorials & Other Articles) or "Non-EOA". In order for a post to be classified as "EOA", it needed to follow the standard format of up to 4 paragraphs quoted, followed by a non-twitter link (with or without additional commentary by the poster).

I counted 57 "EOA" posts in GD, and 81 "Non-EOA" posts - all from the Greatest Page.

This means approximately 40% or more of Greatest Page posts from GD could be more appropriately posted in EOA.

(During this same time period, only 7 EOA posts made the Greatest Page, including one that was a cross-post from a different forum - not GD).

First, what's the big deal?

Well, just for myself, I would like to be able to streamline my browsing and focus on the things I want to read most since I don't have time to read everything. It's a selfish concern, but one I suspect might be shared by many other DUers. It would greatly simplify and amplify my enjoyment of DU, and again, I suspect it would do so for others as well.

Second, why is this not already happening?

(a) Recs: I noticed one poster who was cross-posting in EOA; the posts in EOA received significantly fewer recs. It's my opinion that if DU were to make EOA a main forum, there would be higher readership and increased recs.

(b) Ease of posting: It only takes one click to get to GD, and so DUers are just naturally more likely to post there. Again, making EOA a main forum (preferably between LBN and GD on the left side of the screen) would make it quicker and easier to navigate there.

(c) Habit: People are just used to it. But habits can be changed if there's a good enough reason for it. An announcement could be made about the new forum; some of the more prolific DU posters could be personally asked to begin posting their articles and editorials in EOA.

Yes, I know I'm a fairly new DUer but I really would love to know what everyone else thinks about this idea.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Due to some pushback, I'm removing the idea of altering the GD Statement of Purpose to discourage the posting of editorials and other articles in GD.
